Kinakaal si fyrste bok
Elsewhere er det bergenske forlaget Kinakaal si fyrste bok. Forlaget er drive av Yiley Wang og Ben Wenhou Yu frå Bergen/Shanghai. Prosjektet deira er at dei ønsker å skape ei kulturell bru mellom norsk og kinesisk kunst.
Boka inneheld åtte teikneseriar av den Shou Wang (Anusman) frå Beijing og meg, Fredrik Rysjedal. Desse teikneseriane har ei dokumentarisk form, som observerar framfor å fortelle ei historie. I mine kapittel skildrar eg omgivelsane eg var i medan me laga boka, i Bergen og på Svalbard. Shou skildrar Beijing, og me speglar kvarandre ved å nytte dei same kapitteloverskriftene som synkroniserar oss tematisk. Boka gir på denne måten lesaren to forskjellige perspektiv på fire kapittel. Sidan den kinesiske leseretningen er frå høgre til venstre er boka delt i to og kan lesast frå begge retningar.
Boka er trykka i 500 eksemplar på engelsk og kinesisk, sjølv om teikneseriane sjølv ikkje inneheld mykje tekst. Elsewhere kan kjøpast her.
Kinakaal first publication
Elsewhere is the first publication from the Bergen based small press publisher Kinakaal. The label is run by Yiley Wang and Ben Wenhou Yu from Shanghai, and they want their books to create a cultural bridge between Norwegian and Chinese art.
The book contains eight stories by the Chinese comic artist Shuo Wang (Anusman) and Fredrik Rysjedal. The comics have a documentary form that observes rather than telling a narrative. Rysjedal describes his surroundings in Bergen and Svalbard which was his whereabouts when he made the project, and Shuo describes Beijing. The two creators mirrors each other by using the same titles of each contribution. You can therefore read the stories of the same title side by side to have a glimpse into the differences and similarities of the two cultures. The book also reflects the different reading direction of the Eest and East, where Shuo’s section is to be read from right to left, and Rysjedal’s section from left to right, which is the reason the comic have two covers and can be read from both sides.
The book is printed in 500 copies, it is written in Chinese and English. Elsewhere is available to buy here.

Kinakaal forlag is a small press publisher house made by Yiley Wang and Ben Wenhou Yu that also run the space Northing in Bergen. This video is from a live stream they made in 2020 to present Elsewhere and other projects.
