About Fredrik Rysjedal

Norwegian comic artist, and illustrator (1980) from Leirvik in Sogn, live and work in Bergen(Norway).

I’m an indipendent comic artist that focus on self publication and performative comic art. I make both documentary and fictional works, but I also enjoy making experimental comics in addition to traditional narratives. I have a Patreon page, where you can join my community to follow my work, at a later stage I will also launch reading subscriptions on Plastikkbarna / Plastic Kids and the rest of my comic archive. At my YouTube-channel I publish behind the panels movies and shorts about my practice.

Highlights in my comicography are:
Krampe (2023), zine/artsits book
Plastikkbarna (2021 <), webcomic
Elsewhere (2019), Kinakål forlag, book
Close, Closer, Closest (2017), interactive comic
Sound of the Aurora (2014), a performance comic

I have a phd in design at University of Bergen, Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, where I have made an artistic research into the use of the moving image in digital comics. You can read the whole project at Researchcatalogue.net. The project also comments and describes the digital comic format in general, so if you are curious on how digital comics works, you can read my take on it in my critical reflection which is called Frozen Moments in Motion.

Comic performance is a comic form I have practised since 2013. In a comic performance I’m screening my comics live while I read them. The shows are performed together with musicians. Titles that I perform are Sound of the Aurora and Close, Closer, Closest.

I’m also into print making and self publishing. I make fanzines, artist books and single prints, printed in limited editions. I co-run a space inBergen called Pamflett. Pamflett is a workshop for selfpublication, but also creates events that promotes artist books. At our workshop we have a Riso-printer and we can offer equipment for binding booklets and books. Pamflett’s most important event is Bergen Art Book Fair, which has been an annual international event since 2013.

I am also the current editor of Numer, a printed and online magazine about the visual art of drawing, published by Tegnerforbundet.

I also teach illustration and comic creation as extern teacher at institutions as KMD at the University in Bergen, and USN.

If you are interested in my process, or even interested in seeing content and sketches before it’s released, its possible to become a patreon at Patreon.com.
